Career Planning For Teens Made Simple
By Olive Redwood
'A smartly constructed self-help book for teenagers, offering them the tools they need to pick the right career path. Highly recommended!' The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW
I very much enjoyed this smartly constructed self-help book for teenagers. Written by Olive Redwood, it's designed to help a youngsters to think about careers whilst also offering advice to them on how to get to where they want to be, and how not to fall into the many pitfalls along the way. Although I suspect the author's US-based, I'm also happy to report there's helpful advice in here for ALL teenagers, whether they live in New York or North Yorkshire!
There were a number of elements to this book I particularly enjoyed. Firstly, the writing style is highly accessible; as a result, I don't think any teenager would feel out of his/her depth reading this. Accessibility's further improved by the way the book is designed, with lots of small clumps of text, effective subtitling and space for note taking. Secondly, although as the title suggests, it's 'simple' – and it is; it's also far-ranging, the author exploring a large number of career-related subjects including assessing skills, internships, and even the importance of being motivated! I particularly welcomed the page on Career Counselors and Mentors and how to work with them to get the best results.
So, if you happen to be a little flummoxed about which career to choose, this book could be for you. I think most teenagers will find it thought-provoking and (most importantly) helpful. In many ways, the book acts as a tool to help focus the teenager's thoughts. By doing this, by offering readers a road map, it might help them to feel less overwhelmed. And that can't be a bad thing.
Overall, a bit of a gem!
