The Book of Seila, A Dystopian Novel
By Wilda Hughes
“A thought-provoking insight into a dystopian world, where nobody can be trusted. Perfect for fans of THG and The Handmaid's Tale.” The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW
If I was to sum up this book in a sentence, it would be – if you liked The Handmaid's Tale, you'll love this. Similar to THT, it's dystopian and the protagonist is female. Also, like the classic novel, it's well—written, suspense-filled with a tendency to focus on the characters as opposed to the plot. And that, in many ways, is it biggest strength, the characters jumping off the page. I'm particularly referring to Ruby (Jim) who's very much the jam who holds everything together. She's brave, resourceful and very determined – sort of Katniss Everdeen without the bow!
So, to the plot. Well, in a nutshell, it's the story of two sisters who attempt to flee a destructive regime. Travelling south, Ruby encounters an array of characters – most of them, I have to say, pretty messed up. It's very much a world of betrayal and informers, where nobody can be trusted. There's also a biblical element to the story, God's laws often interpreted to fit the agenda of the oppressive – hmm, now where's that happening a lot at the moment!?
I think fans of this dark, futuristic genre will love this book. I suspect most readers will enjoy getting to know the scary world Ruby finds herself in, and they'll be rooting for her and her sister to find the safety they long for. I very much hope this is the beginning of a set of novels set in this world; if so, I'd be happy to check out book two.
