Ai: Opening
By George St. Georges
'A highly complex, yet satisfying read, perfect for readers who enjoy a mental challenge.' The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW
To be perfectly honest, It's even difficult to summarize this book. But I will do my best. It's the story of Walt Walls who is a student at Credence University on the island of Ai. It is a story of discovery but, as the author suggests in Chapter Zero (yes, Zero), is this a mystery to be solved? A historical novel? A love story? Myth? Horror? A literary novel? Hmm, having just read it, I still don't know the answer. But I can say I was very impressed by many parts of it.
To begin with, the writing style is, for want of a better word, imaginative. I must say, the author is a competent writer who enjoys playing with words. There's a good flow to the novel and although the pacing is erratic, the style is literary and, well, impressive. It's also not full of errors; always welcome in this world of self-publishing. This book, thankfully, has been well-edited. I also enjoyed the atmosphere of Credence University. It's rather dark in many ways; almost claustrophobic – but it added a lot to the story.
So, what needs work? Well, It is overly complex in parts. In a way, I suspect the writer intended this. Keep them hooked; keep them turning the page. But I think he went a little too far; as a result, I wasn't so much 'hooked' as 'highly confused'. My advice to the author would be, “Yes, surprise, even shock the reader as often as you can, but remember, it's important to keep the reader with you, not floundering in a fog of words.”
I'm happy to recommend this book to anybody who enjoys being pushed and who possibly has an interest in the Bible; analyzing it as opposed to blindly following it. This is no light, beach read. You'll need to focus; concentrate – hunt for the answers with a little help (but not a lot) from the MC. In all honesty, I suspect most readers will get frustrated but, hey, nobody can accuse this writer of dumbing it down. All in all, this is niche stuff that'll drag many readers out of their comfort zone.
