The Brave Little puppy
By Michael Wong
'A sweetly told story of a little puppy determined to find a loving home. Highly recommended to 6 – 8 year olds.' The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW
There's a lot to enjoy in this simply written adventure for very young children. The author, Michael Wong, is a talented writer who understands his readership and what they want. He keeps the story accessible, the characters lovable, and the plot, for the most part, unpredictable.
It's the story of a puppy who's left in a box by the door to a pet shop. A boy sees him and wants to bring him home, but he's pulled away by his mother. So the puppy, determined to find the boy, runs after him. What follows is a fun-filled adventure, as the puppy falls in rivers, and gets a little help from a very big dog!
There are many aspects of this story that impressed me. Firstly, the vocabulary is highly accessible, and I suspect most 6 to 8 year olds will have little difficulty in following what happens. Secondly, I love the artwork; it's super bright, super colourful, and fits the story perfectly. And, thirdly, there's a Christmas feel to it - it must be all the snow - making it the perfect gift for the winter holidays.
I'm delighted to recommend this book to any grandparents parents or carers looking for a sweetly told story for a young child. Although the ending is a little bit predictable, I think most kids will enjoy the sweetness of the story, and they'll be rooting for the little puppy to find the boy – and a safe and loving home.
