The Tree of Life
By Jack Holt
'A skilfully plotted historical adventure with a distinct Da Vinci Code feel to it.' The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW
Lord Robert de Borron is the protagonist in this cleverly plotted, historical novel from the pen of Jack Holt. Book Two of a trilogy, Lord Robert is on the hunt for a parchment and, with it, the Cup of Christ. Although it can get overly complicated in parts (Chapter IX had me very confused), this is a superbly written novel, helped along by a cast of strong characters and exotic settings. The author seems to be enjoying himself as he tempts the hero (and the reader) with hundreds of tiny plot twists, secret symbols and, with a nod to Dan Brown´s writing, a yet undiscovered fifth gospel!
I must say, I did enjoy this romp into the past. Yes, it can get a bit wordy and difficult to follow in parts, but I didn´t mind that so much. I sort of enjoy a challenge; and I relished trying to work out what was coming next almost as much as the protagonist did. The author is also a competent writer, using speech to fully develop his characters. But best of all, there´s A LOT of suspense as we follow Lord Robert and company on the hunt for hidden parchments lost in time.
I´m very happy to recommend this novel to anybody who enjoys solving a puzzle. It´s not a breeze; readers will need to work hard to keep up with what´s happening, but trust me when I tell you, it´s worth it. You´ll never see what´s coming next and, for me, that´s the sign of a wonderful book.
