Walter Brown and the Magician’s Hat
By Karen Inglis
‘A superbly written, magical adventure. Highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf
The adventure begins on Walter’s tenth birthday when he is given a magical top hat (and wand) from his Great Grandpa Horace. Slipping on the hat, the boy finds he can now do magic; not only that, but he can now understand everything his cat, Sixth Sense, is saying.
What follows is a fun-filled adventure as young Walter attempts to discover what he can and cannot do with his new powers. Helped by his cat, he starts by helping monsters to escape from a computer game: Planet Voss Monster Battle. But this ends up backfiring (BIG TIME!)…
There are many aspects to this short children’s novel which are excellent. Firstly, the style of writing is a perfect balance of ‘pace’ and ‘character development’. In very few words, the author successfully helps the reader to understand Walter (and his cat) and, as a result, the reader starts to care for them and what will happen to them.
The story, I felt, had a very ‘feel good’ feeling to it, helped by the style of the writing. Enjoying this story was like putting on old slippers. For example, ‘mumbled in a sleepy grump’; how lovely. The author also seems to work particularly well with speech and the characters stay in character from Chapter 1 to Chapter 9.
If there were any aspects of the book I would work it would be the overuse of the exclamation mark. For example, on page 80, there are ten!
With short chapters and a sprinkling of well-drawn illustrations, I would happily recommend this book to any 7 to 10 year olds. I’m happy to see Walter will be in another adventure soon. I’m looking forward to it.
